A Million Miles From Boston By Karen Day, Tells Us That People Are Not What They Always Seem, and Friendship Can Be Found In The Most Unusual Places

Author, Karen Day, will be featured at Westwinds Bookshop on Wednesday, July 20th to highlight A Million Miles From Boston. It is the story of 12-year old, Lucy Gallagher who lives in Boston with her dad, her brother, and her dog Superior. How Lucy deals with the changes ahead, how her family deals with these changes, and what she learns is quietly amazing.

From loyal readers we hear, “I've read all of Karen Day's work and really love it, but A Million Miles From Boston is her most universally powerful book yet;”powerful because this well-crafted story of a young girl on the cusp of her teens comes alive with the emotional unfolding of Lucy’s character.

After a rough school year with Ian, an annoying boy and her father’s new girlfriend, Lucy goes to favorite place, her grandparent’s beach house in Pierson Point, Maine. Unlike other summers, this one turns out to be increasingly dramatic, Ian shows up in Pierson Point with his parents. He is popular, but loud and mean, putting Ian and Lucy in conflict. To top it off, Lucy is having trouble accepting her dad’s girlfriend, six years after her mother’s death. Could it get worse? No, because ultimately Lucy learns a valuable lesson after facing some major issues.

Karen Day grew up in Indiana and now lives in Newton, Massachusetts, with her husband and three children. Her love of reading, writing, and literature has taken her through careers in journalism and teaching. She is also the author of No Cream Puffs and Tall Tales.
